About the Rats
SCROLL TO SEE THE RATTOS!
Thank you for considering adoption! We almost always adopt rats out with at least one friend. Single rats that come into our care are matched with one or more friends before adoption whenever possible. Rats posted together are likely bonded & must be adopted as a group, or sometimes, in smaller groups/pairs. *If you don’t see a bio - reach out, or check back soon - one will be up shortly! We update info here as often as we can :)
*Do not assume sex and sterilization status. Many of our rats are spayed or neutered, and some have gendered names that do not align with their sex in the way society expects.
We accept specific & general applications, before you see the cute face! Not all rats in our care are posted here. We update as often as we can, but sometimes get too busy! If you submit an application ahead of time, we can get you approved, & let you know when we have a match! This helps us home rats sooner, which is wonderful considering rats’ lives are so short. *Please note, we still need to quarantine & get to know all rats before they go home.
Some of the rats listed here are completing quarantine, recovering from illness, injury, or routine surgery (spay/neuters), while others are sorting out some emotional problems before jumping into any new relationships! Many of these rats will be available for adoption soon, and some are available for foster-to-adopt while they await and recover from routine spay/neuters. Rats currently in foster-to-adopt homes are not usually posted here. Sometimes other rats with pending adoptions are also not posted.
Our sanctuary rats on the other hand, will remain with us for the rest of their lives. They’re matched with a permanent foster family dedicated to helping them live their best lives. While in our care, they get loved up on & spoiled for the rest of their days. Our sanctuary rats are given the chance to know how it feels to be a “heart rat.” They’re given a world full of love & are surrounded by this love when they transition through end of life. Rats who are already palliative, or seen as “less adoptable” due to behavioural or medical needs may be placed in sanctuary.
Sponsorship helps us recover vet costs so we can accept new intakes. Contribute to a rat’s Sponsorship for ANY AMOUNT. Every bit helps. Rats may have multiple sponsors to reach their goal. To sponsor, send a one-time donation with the name of the rat you’d like to sponsor in the notes.
- E-transfer: [email protected]
- PayPal: @RainbowRatRefuge
- Or sign up as a Monthly Supporter
*please note: services are often discounted for our rescue thanks to our partnerships with generous veterinary professionals. Adopters should expect to pay more for their rats at most vet clinics. Total sponsorship amounts also don’t include preventative parasite treatment, mobile RVT exams, or other care costs.

ADOPTABLE
Sunny + Sandy + Stormy
Sunny | white with gray spot on back
Sandy | himalayan (brown nose)
Stormy | gray around ears
These 3 girls came from a deplorably neglectful situation. We estimate them to be young, likely around 6 months old. They are all unaltered females. Thankfully, they are healthy and coming around wonderfully to humans. Sunny, specifically, is getting pretty comfortable being pet, and Sandy is coming around. Stormy used to be a bit nippy, but has only been sniffing lately (yay). Given that they're still learning to trust, these lovelies would be best suited for a family with experience with rats, bonus if you have another friend or 2 for them!
The trio comes with a semi-bioactive DCN setup for a qualifying adopter.

Chico
|
Mr. Chico has been discharged from the hospital and is feeling pretty good! He came to us on Sunday from a shelter and is said to have been treated badly in the past. We accepted him due to his need for urgent medical attention. Chico went straight to the hospital when he arrived. He had bloody urine, and blood around his genitals. He was sedated, x-rays were taken, and it was discovered that he also had an abscess on his shoulder.
While sedated, the vet drained his abscess. He is taking 2 medications now, we’re hopeful his shoulder will heal up quickly, and that this will take care of the bloody urine issue. If not, he will return for some more tests. He’s a cute, spunky and chunky dude! |
Riddle + Jolene + Ferrari
|
Riddle | large white marking on face | spayed female | 1 year
Jolene | small white marking on face | spayed female | 1 year Ferrari | agouti | unaltered male | 10 months old “Jolene has warmed up a lot more since she's been here, she is equally as curious as Riddle and really likes to play. When I scratch her bum to get her going she races around and always comes back for more. When she's tired out she likes to find a place in my sweater or right above my head on the couch and just relax. Riddle is a handful in the best way possible, she loves to climb and explore. She was the first one of the bunch that was ready to go and see every corner of the room. I don't think I've ever seen her get tired during free roam time she's always on the go and ready to play. The two of them when they're together is so adorable, they'll play and chase each other around. When they're not playing they're always curled up next to each other Ferrari is still a bit timid but has been enjoying the bonding scarf when he's out and about he's exploring, doesn't seem like a climber (yet). Jolene and Ferrari seem to cuddle the most right now.” *updated March 9/2024 |
Lemon + Strawberry
|
These 2 girls came through a shelter dealing with a hoarding case of 70+ rats. We're happy to say that introductions were successful. They still need to come around to humans, so we are working on understanding their behaviours, and with socialization at their pace. We have offered these girls permanent sanctuary due to their behavioural needs.
